Orchid Safari on Gotland
Enjoy Gotland´s rich blooming landscape during a day tour.
Meet many of Gotland´s beautiful orchids during a guided day tour. Gotland is one of the best places in Sweden to explore those fascinating and special plants. More than 35 species regularly occur in this limestone-rich landscape. Around first of May, you will find the first specimen of Early-Purple Orchid and Green-winged Orchid in graced meadow fields. The blooming of different species last through to the end of August. The best time to watch orchids on Gotland, with many species in bloom, starts at the beginning of June and continues to mid-July.
Many rare species.
The orchid White Helleborine (Cephalanthera damasonium) is only recorded (endemic) on Gotland. Other species like the very rare Pyramidal Orchid (Anacamptis pyramidanis) are unique to the landscapes of Gotland and Öland.
The Fly Orchid - A fake insect.
The Fly Orchid (Ophrys insectifera) is a beautiful and fascinating orchid. The flowers use mimicry – they are very similar to a female Hymenoptera insect. The flowers attract the male insect which tries to copulate with the flower. The insect then gets some pollen on its body and helps the orchids to reproduce. The flower also produces a ferromone, which attracts the male insect with the smell. We will offer a fantastic tour to beautiful secret places in Sweden´s best orchid habitats. Normally we see around 15 different species of orchids. This orchid safari can also be arranged by request.
